Prepaid Kreditkarten

Are you looking for a prepaid credit card without a credit check? A reloadable card can only spend what you put on it – but at most providers that safety comes with noticeable fees. Our top 5 comparison for 2026 shows which cards are actually worth it.

Trade Republic Classic Card

  • Free debit card with no annual fee
  • Free payments worldwide with no foreign transaction fees
  • Free cash withdrawals worldwide (from €100)
  • 1% cashback with the Saveback feature
  • Interest on credit balances
  • Low-cost trades with the linked securities account
One time 5 Euro issuance fee

Anyone searching for a card without a SCHUFA enquiry ends up with credit-balance cards almost automatically. That market has shrunk considerably: several well-known providers discontinued their prepaid cards in recent years, while top-up debit cards now offer far better terms. Below we show you what matters when comparing them.

Key facts at a glance

  • A prepaid credit card is loaded before you spend, which is why it can be issued without a credit check and without a SCHUFA enquiry.
  • That makes it interesting above all for teenagers, apprentices and anyone who cannot get a regular credit card in the first place.
  • It is a poor fit for rental car and hotel deposits, because it has no credit line – and it builds no SCHUFA contract history either.
  • Above all it costs money: Commerzbank charges 39.90 euros per year for its prepaid card, while many top-up debit cards are permanently free.

💡 Good to know: Genuine prepaid credit cards have become rare in Germany. VIABUY shut down its service in August 2024 and netbank has already returned its banking licence. That is why we also include top-up debit cards in our comparison.

Who benefits from a prepaid credit card?

Whether a prepaid credit card pays off depends less on its price than on your starting position: it is an option whenever a regular credit card is out of reach in the first place. Our reisetopia financial experts have summarised who the card suits – and who is better served elsewhere.

Suitable forLess suitable for
✔️ Teenagers who need a first card of their own for paying online✘ Travellers who have to leave a rental car or hotel deposit
✔️ Applicants without a positive credit record or a steady income✘ Anyone who wants to pay and withdraw cash worldwide free of charge
✔️ Anyone who wants to cap their budget strictly and avoid debt✘ Anyone expecting insurance, lounge access or miles from a card
✔️ Anyone looking for a card without their own current account✘ Anyone who wants to build a SCHUFA contract history

These criteria naturally point to teenagers, whether they apply for a prepaid credit card online themselves or receive one from their parents but also to students going abroad for a semester.

Prepaid cards can also be a good option for freelancers and asylum seekers, as applying for a regular credit card is often difficult due to credit requirements. Thanks to the low financial risk, even those with a poor credit score can usually obtain a reloadable credit card.

How does a prepaid credit card work?

There are a total of four types of credit cards, which primarily differ in their method of payment:

  • Charge credit card
  • Debit credit card
  • Revolving credit card
  • Prepaid credit card

A prepaid credit card is often referred to as a reloadable credit card. As the name suggests, you don’t borrow money when using it — instead, you load funds onto the card in advance. This means a prepaid credit card must always have a balance before you can use it, and it does not come with a credit limit.

You might wonder why it’s even called a “credit card” when it doesn’t actually provide credit. The reason is simple: most prepaid cards are issued by Visa or Mastercard, which are generally known as the world’s largest credit card networks.

Mastercard and visa cards
most prepaid credit cards are Visa or Mastercard

Carrying a Visa or Mastercard gives you access to millions of payment locations worldwide. With a prepaid credit card, you can enjoy many of the same advantages as a regular credit card, while avoiding certain drawbacks — for example, credit checks or the risk of going into debt.

Furthermore, because no extensive credit check is required, prepaid credit cards are generally instant approval cards. You can apply for a prepaid credit card immediately and start loading funds and making payments right away.

With regular credit cards, you receive a monthly credit limit

A prepaid credit card works in such a way that after applying for the card with the respective bank, you receive an online account in which the transactions are collected. However, before you can make such transactions, you must first top up your card account and transfer credit.

This usually works via a normal bank transfer, although there are other ways to top up a prepaid credit card. From this point on, you can use your prepaid Visa or Mastercard just like a normal credit card. However, if your credit is used up, your card will no longer be accepted and you must top it up again.

What is a single-use credit card?

A single-use credit card refers to cards that are usually virtual and valid only for a certain period. This type of card is mostly used for online purchases, as the short validity provides higher security and reduces the possibility of fraud.

We have summarized the features of a single-use credit card for you:

  • Temporary validity: The validity of a single-use credit card is usually limited to one month or specific transactions.
  • 🖥️ Online card: A single-use credit card can also be virtual. In this case, it is not issued as a physical plastic card and can only be used for online payments.
  • 💳 Limited amount: Some single-use credit cards may have a maximum limit or spending restriction.
  • 🔐 Security: Since the single-use credit card is often limited to a certain period and specific transactions, it is often safer than regular credit cards, as it reduces the risk of fraud.

What are the advantages of prepaid credit cards?

Anyone who uses a prepaid credit card enjoys several advantages compared to other types. We summarize these for you and explain how to make the most of them!

All advantages at a glance:

  • Billing of the prepaid card
  • Easy application without a credit check
  • No risk of debt
  • Can be purchased at gas stations
  • Ideal for minors

Most important advantage: billing of the prepaid card

Certainly the first and most important advantage of a prepaid credit card is the billing and payment method. Because the card is loaded in advance, you have full control over your spending at all times and can precisely estimate how much money you are spending with the card.

This can be very practical, for example, when traveling abroad. You can load your budget onto the card before the trip and in any case never spend more than the balance. The top-up process is usually relatively straightforward, so you can cover the card balance easily via a standard bank transfer.

Easy application without a credit check

Since a prepaid credit card is not a financial product that allows you to go into debt, it is simply not necessary to obtain a credit check (such as SCHUFA) when applying.

Woman holding a black credit card in her hand.
The prepaid card can be applied for without a credit check

You can apply for such a credit card without having a good credit score. That’s exactly why most banks waive the credit check and issue the prepaid credit card completely without a credit check.

💡 SCHUFA explained: SCHUFA is Germany’s credit scoring system. It helps banks, landlords and other service providers assess how reliable you are when it comes to payments. SCHUFA does not track your income or savings. It is based on information such as bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and ongoing contracts. Responsible financial behavior helps build a positive SCHUFA profile, which is important for everyday life in Germany.

This also means that applying for a prepaid card is much simpler than for a regular credit card: providers do not ask for proof of income, and approval does not depend on a credit check. With some providers identification is waived entirely – the Money2Go Card is issued without a SCHUFA check and without the PostIdent procedure, according to its issuer. For most other cards, video identification or PostIdent is still part of the process.

Additionally, for any prepaid credit card, for example a free prepaid credit card without a checking account, you don’t need to open a new bank account, unlike with the ING or comdirect credit cards.

No risk of debt

Since a prepaid credit card has no credit limit, you cannot accumulate debt with it. With regular credit cards, this is often one of the most advertised advantages, as banks earn money from the interest that accrues.

That is exactly where the appeal lies for many users: you can only ever spend what has been loaded beforehand, so instalment plans with high interest simply do not exist on credit-balance cards.

Can be purchased at gas stations

If you want to get a prepaid credit card, in some countries you can even buy it at a gas station without any problems. It is important to check in advance which prepaid cards are available at the desired gas station.

Possible gas stations where prepaid credit cards can be purchased include Aral, Esso, Shell, and Jet. You can also top up the card at these stations, which allows you, for example, to pay directly at the pump.

Ideal for minors

A prepaid credit card for minors is a practical solution to teach teenagers responsible money management and digital payments. Since they work only on a preloaded balance, there is no risk of debt. Parents retain full control, can set limits, and can top up the account whenever needed.

Prepaid credit cards are ideal for minors

These cards are especially practical for allowance, school trips, or online purchases and as preparation for responsible financial management in adulthood.

Established banks cater for this too: Commerzbank issues its prepaid card free of charge to holders between 14 and 18 years of age, while adults pay 39.90 euros per year for the very same card.

Prepaid credit card and regular credit card compared

The following overview shows where exactly a credit-balance card differs from a genuine credit card with a credit line:

 Prepaid credit cardRegular credit card
BillingDeducted immediately from balanceMonthly billing
Credit Check
Credit LimitOnly within loaded balance
Available at Gas StationsPartially possible
For MinorsFrom approx. 12 yearsFrom 18 years

The comparison makes it clear that a prepaid card scores above all where a regular credit card is not available in the first place.

What are the disadvantages of prepaid credit cards?

Unfortunately, prepaid credit cards don’t only have advantages — there are also disadvantages. In fact, there are quite a few, because, as mentioned earlier, banks earn a large portion of their revenue from installment payments on regular credit cards, which do not exist with prepaid cards. This means that the money has to be earned elsewhere, which, of course, affects you as the customer.

The main disadvantages of prepaid credit cards at a glance:

  • High and often well-hidden fees, from the annual fee to withdrawal charges
  • Limited acceptance wherever a deposit has to be blocked
  • No financial flexibility once the balance runs out while you are away
  • No extras such as insurance, lounge access or miles
  • No SCHUFA contract history is built up

High fees with prepaid credit cards

The most important disadvantage you should always keep in mind when looking for a free prepaid credit card is the hidden fees.

Commerzbank shows what the individual items can look like – it is one of the few branch banks still offering a classic credit-balance card. We last read the following terms in the bank’s price and service list in August 2026:

Type of feeWhat it is charged forExample: Commerzbank prepaid credit card
Annual feeBase price for the card, regardless of usage39.90 euros (0 euros for holders aged 14 to 18)
Cash withdrawalEvery withdrawal at an ATM, in Germany and abroad1.95 percent, minimum 5.98 euros
Foreign transaction feePayments outside the eurozone1.75 percent of the transaction
Top-upTransferring credit to the card accountfree of charge, maximum balance 5,000 euros
Activation and inactivity feeOne-off activation or extended non-usenot charged

As you can easily see, the list of potential fees is quite long. One particularly striking point is that it can even cost money to make payments and this can happen even domestically. This is, of course, not the case with all models, but it can occur.

Man stacking coins.
Prepaid credit cards can have high fees

When choosing a prepaid credit card, pay close attention to the fee structure and make sure to research thoroughly beforehand so you aren’t caught by surprise. The costs are usually very hidden, so you should carefully review the terms and conditions of each card before making a decision.

Tip: There are also free credit cards that allow you to avoid all these fees. Feel free to check out our free credit card comparison!

Acceptance of prepaid credit cards

Besides fees, another issue with prepaid credit cards is that they are not always treated the same as regular credit cards. This can be particularly problematic when traveling, as you often need to provide a security deposit.

For example, when checking into a hotel or booking a rental car, you are usually asked for a credit card to secure a deposit. If you use a prepaid credit card in these situations, there is a high chance that the card will be declined.

Payment with the Credit Card
Payment by card

This is because the amount for the deposit is only placed on hold rather than actually charged. Since a prepaid card doesn’t have a credit line, the provider can’t place that kind of hold on it.

Less financial flexibility

What may initially seem like a big advantage of prepaid credit cards is also a disadvantage. While you always have full control over your spending, you can also be unlucky in unforeseen situations.

Sun hat with sunglasses and credit card.
Financial flexibility is especially important when traveling

For example, imagine you are abroad with your credit card and have planned your expenses in advance, but suddenly need to spend more money than planned. In that case, your budget is used up, and you have no way to access additional funds or in extreme cases, you may have to pay significantly higher fees to get money. For this reason, we always recommend keeping a travel credit card in your wallet.

Missing advantages compared to regular credit cards

The most important disadvantage of a prepaid credit card is that, in principle, it offers nothing beyond the ability to make payments. The fact that you may also have to pay fees for this convenience does not make the overall product particularly attractive.

Airport lounge seats.
Some credit cards give you free access to airport lounges

Considering that you usually pay a significant annual fee for a prepaid credit card, plus numerous additional fees, it may be worth applying for a regular credit card instead.

For example, there are many credit cards that offer benefits such as airport lounge access, earning miles, or important insurance coverage.

Prepaid cards build no SCHUFA track record

One drawback rarely mentioned in comparisons: a prepaid card builds no contract history. Since the reform, the age of your oldest credit card is a criterion in its own right, worth up to 81 points – but only genuine credit cards with a credit line count towards it. The published scale looks like this:

Age of the oldest genuine credit cardPoints
no credit card at all24
under six months0
from six months14
from one year23
from three years41
from five years59
from ten years74
from 15 years81

If you only ever hold credit-balance cards, you stay on the 24 points meant for “no credit card”, no matter how many years your prepaid card has been running. Note the second row as well: a newly opened first credit card scores below having none at all for its first six months. The advantage only builds up over time.

SCHUFA criterion age of oldest credit card
A credit card younger than six months scores lower than having no card at all

The other direction is just as clear: because a prepaid card is issued without a SCHUFA enquiry, it does not touch the criterion for enquiries and contracts either, which runs from 117 points with nothing on file down to zero from the third entry in twelve months. A prepaid card is therefore neutral both ways – it will not damage your score, but it will not improve it either.

💡 Good to know: If the prepaid card is a stopgap for you, move to a genuine credit card as soon as you can get one, because the clock for contract age only starts at signing. And if several applications are due at that point, keep them inside the same 28 days – SCHUFA then counts them as a single entry, measured from the first enquiry.

What the remaining criteria contribute, and how a real score adds up, is set out in our SCHUFA score report (in German).

What are the requirements for a prepaid credit card?

Because no credit is granted with a credit-balance card, the requirements for a prepaid credit card are far lower than for a regular card. They are not non-existent, though.

These are the points providers usually ask for:

  • A residence in Germany – for its prepaid card, Commerzbank additionally requires unlimited tax liability in Germany
  • A valid identity document for video identification or PostIdent
  • A minimum age: classic credit-balance cards are sometimes available to teenagers, while the online application is usually aimed at adults
  • An account you can top the card up from by bank transfer or standing order

If you do not hold a German or EU identity document, check which papers your provider accepts before applying. For its prepaid credit card, Commerzbank names only legal age, residence and unlimited tax liability in Germany, and does not list a residence permit as a separate requirement. Other providers are stricter: Revolut requires nationals from outside the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland to hold a visa or residence permit valid for at least another three months. A separate work permit is not a condition for the card at any of the providers we checked.

Black credit card and smartphone
Application and identification are handled digitally at most providers

If you meet these points, a credit-balance card is usually approved immediately – only your identity is verified, not your creditworthiness.

How do you apply for a prepaid credit card?

Once you have picked a model, the rest is quickly done. Anyone who wants to apply for a prepaid credit card usually needs only a few minutes, as there is no credit check.

Apply for a prepaid credit card
The application for a credit-balance card is done in minutes

Before you start, it is worth looking at the order of the individual steps.

This is how you get your card:

1️⃣ Pick a card: compare the fees first. The annual, withdrawal and foreign transaction fees are what decide how much the card really costs you per year.

2️⃣ Fill in the application: enter your personal details and your address. Providers do not ask for proof of income on credit-balance cards.

3️⃣ Identify yourself: identification runs via video ident on your phone or via PostIdent. Have your identity document ready.

4️⃣ Receive the card: card and PIN arrive separately by post. At Commerzbank this usually takes three working days after successful identification.

5️⃣ Top up your balance: transfer the amount you want to the card account. Pay close attention to the required payment reference, otherwise the credit cannot be allocated.

6️⃣ Activate and go: once the balance is booked, you can use the card worldwide and add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay.

The first step matters most – because the running costs differ enormously between providers.

One time 5 Euro issuance fee

Prepaid credit card without a bank account

There are also prepaid credit cards that can be applied for completely without a bank account. Often, such prepaid cards can even be purchased at gas stations.

Classic standalone prepaid cards – such as the former PayangoCard, CristalCard or InsideCard – have largely disappeared from the German market, which is why app-based cards with a top-up logic have taken their place.

Among the current options, top-up debit cards from app banks come closest to the idea of a prepaid card. Keep in mind, though, that the free standard accounts of these providers do involve a credit check – the point of a genuine credit-balance card is precisely that it does not.

How much does a prepaid credit card cost per year?

How expensive a credit-balance card really gets only shows in everyday use. We have therefore worked through a typical year: 3,000 euros of card spending, of which 600 euros in foreign currency, plus twelve cash withdrawals of 100 euros each. The basis is the Commerzbank prepaid credit card terms we verified in August 2026:

ItemCost per year
Annual fee39.90 euros
Twelve cash withdrawals of 100 euros (1.95 percent, minimum 5.98 euros)71.76 euros
600 euros of spending in foreign currency (1.75 percent)10.50 euros
Value received through insurance, reward points or a sign-up bonus0 euros
Total cost per year122.16 euros

That leaves roughly 122 euros in costs and not a single euro of value in return, because credit-balance cards come with neither insurance nor a rewards programme. A permanently free card costs 0 euros in the very same scenario.

Credit card statement
The running fees only become visible on the monthly statement

Our financial experts therefore see the value of a prepaid credit card not in its price but in its availability: for anyone who cannot get a card at all otherwise, even a credit-balance card with an annual fee is a real gain in freedom of action. Paying online, paying abroad or withdrawing cash while travelling only becomes possible with it – and the risk of running into debt stays at zero. If you do have a choice, a free card is clearly the cheaper route.

What are our experiences with the best prepaid credit cards?

Which is the best prepaid card in comparison?

If you have decided to apply for a prepaid credit card, the next step is to compare the different providers and choose a model. Pay attention to fees and acceptance to find the card that best suits your needs!

A classic credit-balance card from a large bank is today mainly available at Commerzbank: the prepaid credit card costs 39.90 euros per year there, but is issued without any credit assessment and is free of charge for holders aged 14 to 18. If you do not have a SCHUFA hurdle to clear, a top-up debit card is clearly the better deal – which is why our financial experts recommend the Trade Republic card as the best prepaid credit card in the wider sense: it comes without an annual fee and settles foreign-currency payments without a surcharge. The one percent Saveback, however, requires a savings plan of at least 50 euros and is capped at 15 euros per month, and issuing the Classic card costs a one-off 5 euros.

Often read but not correct: N26 does not issue a prepaid card at all. The account comes with a Mastercard Debit, and N26 Flex, designed specifically for people with a negative SCHUFA record, costs 8.90 euros per month. Compared with a credit-balance card charging an annual fee, that is no bargain.

How did we test the prepaid credit cards?

Our assessment does not rest on fact sheets alone: the reisetopia financial experts use credit-balance and debit cards themselves, in everyday life and while travelling, and regularly check the terms against the providers’ official price lists.

👉 How reisetopia evaluates financial products: To help you find the best financial products in Germany, we have been conducting independent and comprehensive comparisons for many years. We test and evaluate offers based on clearly defined criteria such as fees, features, and customer service, and present the results in a transparent way. This approach allows you to make well-informed financial decisions with confidence.

What are the best alternatives to a prepaid credit card?

As you have probably already noticed, prepaid credit cards are not ideal in terms of value for money compared to regular credit cards. That’s why we want to briefly show you what you are “missing out on” if you choose a prepaid model.

The ideal free credit card for local and long distance travel thanks to fee free withdrawals and payments!

Our conclusion on prepaid credit cards without a credit check

Prepaid credit cards are still far more common in everyday use than they need to be. High fees, hardly any extras and limited flexibility make them unattractive next to a regular credit card – and they build no SCHUFA contract history on top of that.

Nevertheless, there are specific situations where a prepaid credit card can be a good choice, for example, if you need a card for a world trip. If you are already a customer of a traditional bank and can improve the conditions that way, that is probably the better option.
