Which credit cards in Germany have a high limit?
Taking out credit with a credit card has become the norm for most people. However, at some point there is a limit at which the credit stops. For most cards, this limit is around 1,000 euros. This restricts how freely you can use the money. So the question arises: Are there credit cards without a limit?
The best high-limit credit cards 2026
Anyone who wants to make sure a high limit is available even before applying for a credit card can take a closer look at the best models in our comparison. With the credit cards in our example, you can usually apply for a credit limit of up to 10,000 euros.
These are generally premium credit cards, such as the sought-after platinum credit cards, which offer numerous advantages when traveling thanks to their comprehensive insurance packages.

In Germany, an American Express® credit card probably comes closest to having an unlimited limit. This is because the credit card issuer sets the limits itself. And if the customer’s income allows it, unlimited credit and spending limits can be granted. In fact, the card limit increases with each use of the card. Particularly advantageous in this regard is the American Express Platinum Card.

Are there credit cards with no limit?
A credit card with absolutely no limit does not actually exist. So-called luxury cards, which are generally not accessible to regular consumers, come closest. However, you usually cannot apply for this type of credit card, as they are only issued by the providers by invitation.

Therefore, only certain customer groups with particularly high incomes can access such a credit card. On the one hand, the American Express Centurion Card is considered one of the most exclusive credit cards in the world; on the other hand, both Visa and Mastercard also offer premium credit card models for limited customer groups. However, it is not exactly clear what requirements must be met for this type of credit card.
Prepaid credit cards
In principle, credit card holders can also set their own limit by using prepaid credit cards. Since the amount is transferred as a balance in advance, the rule is: the higher the credit, the higher the limit. However, you obviously do not receive credit in the sense that the bank provides the money.
Why do credit cards have a limit?
The credit card limit, or credit line, serves as a protective measure. When a customer pays with a credit card, the bank initially covers the amount and later bills the customer for it.
The costs incurred must be covered by the customer, otherwise it is easy to lose track and fall into a debt trap.
Note: Most banks set the credit limit based on your income.
The credit limit thus serves to protect both the cardholder and the bank, which must ensure that the costs incurred are covered by the customer to avoid going into debt. Another factor is card misuse. In case of theft, only the amount up to the limit can be used, not the cardholder’s entire capital.

Of course, the credit limit is not set the same for everyone. In fact, the flexibility can be quite large. Especially with exclusive cards, the limit is set very high, so one can also speak of an individual spending limit.
What requirements must be met for a spending limit?
For most credit cards with a spending limit, certain requirements are considered standard. Not everyone can access a credit limit. There are several factors that influence the chances when applying for a credit card. The basic requirements usually include:
- Residence in Germany
- German bank account
- Good credit score
- Legal age
Although the requirements may vary depending on the bank, you should be prepared that these aspects are relevant when applying for a credit card.
Only prepaid credit cards sometimes waive the credit check, but this is only because no credit is issued with these cards.

With some banks, you may also have to provide proof of income, for example if you need to show a certain salary to use the credit card free of charge.
What does a credit card limit depend on?
As mentioned earlier, it is usually an individual spending limit. But which factors determine the limit? There are several aspects that can influence a credit card limit, including:
- Creditworthiness (SCHUFA score)
- Account management
- Personal requirements (business trips, etc.)
- Reliability
In many cases, the spending limit is set at one or two months’ salary. But other factors also play a role. A significant factor is creditworthiness. Those who earn a lot and rarely overdraw their account naturally receive a higher credit card limit, as they pose less risk to the bank of falling into a debt trap.

Anyone with a negative SCHUFA score consequently has fewer chances of accessing a credit card with a credit limit. Those who want to avoid the credit check should rather consider prepaid credit cards, as these can often be opened without a Schufa inquiry.
Note: The higher your creditworthiness, the higher the credit limit granted to you.
In addition to creditworthiness, personal needs that may incur higher costs are sometimes taken into account. These include, for example, frequent flights, hotel stays, or business trips in general. The limit is also influenced by account management. Sometimes, money can be transferred to the credit card account to increase the limit.
As a final criterion, payment behavior can also influence the spending limit. Customers who always pay on time and appear trustworthy to the bank may be more likely to receive a higher limit than risk-taking or late-paying customers.
💡 SCHUFA explained: SCHUFA is Germany’s credit scoring system. It helps banks, landlords and other service providers assess how reliable you are when it comes to payments. SCHUFA does not track your income or savings. It is based on information such as bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and ongoing contracts. Responsible financial behavior helps build a positive SCHUFA profile, which is important for everyday life in Germany.
Can the limit of a credit card be increased?
The card limit can sometimes put credit card users in difficult situations. Especially during foreign trips or expensive vacations, costs can exceed the limit. In such cases, it can be worthwhile to increase the limit, because once the limit is reached, the card will no longer work until the outstanding costs are paid.
As mentioned earlier, a small part of customer behavior can contribute to an increase in the spending limit. Banks place more trust in customers who always pay on time. Of course, it also makes sense to have a conversation with your bank advisor, where you can explain your personal needs.
To request an increase, a written statement should be submitted, in which the desire for a higher limit is explained with supporting reasons. This can include upcoming trips, life changes, or professional reorientation.
Conclusion on credit cards with high limits 2026
In the end, it can be said: there are no credit cards without a limit. Even with high-end luxury or “black” credit cards, there is still a limit. However, there is really no need for a credit card without a limit, because a very high spending limit is usually granted if the income is sufficient. And if the limit is ever exceeded, the amount simply needs to be repaid and the card becomes functional again. Ultimately, the credit card limit serves to protect both the customer and the bank!
